Now in its 9th year, the Cardiff Harbour Festival will take place over the weekend of Saturday August 27 until Monday August 29. This Bank Holiday weekend event is the biggest event on the horizon, serving up an annual portion of Fish and Ships to amuse and entertain. Tall Ships, sea shanty singers, comedy walkabouts, an International market selling tasty treats, and live music – this weekend is not to be missed!

Look out for the many talented walking entertainers as they roam the bay. Tall Ships, the Ruth and the Matthew will moor at the Inner Harbour. Hop aboard for £1 to see how we used to sail. Also Harbour Patrol vessels will be on site to explain how the Harbour Authority patrols the Bay, keeping our waters clean and safe 365 days a year.

The British Fish Craft Championship will also take place on Sunday August 28. Competitors will complete a series of tasks from filleting salmon to preparing seafood. There will also be a series of talks and demonstrations on Saturday and Monday on buying, preparing and cooking delicious fish dishes. The winner of the inaugural Harbour Festival and Jamie’s Italian ‘Find a Fish Dish’ competition will be showcased on Saturday in the Fish Tent, with the winning recipe available for visitors to take away and try out at home.

A new highlight for this year is the Breitling Wing Walkers who will fly over Cardiff Bay on Sunday at 12pm and Monday at 4.30pm. Also new for this year is Team Osprey, who will showcase a fantastic aerial demonstration. For a great view, head to the water’s edge on Saturday at 3pm and Monday at 2.30pm.

Following its popularity in 2010, Last Resort returns offering alternative end of pier attractions and children’s entertainment including sand pits, beach huts, street entertainment, plus the Last Resort is the place for all wannabe pirates and sea creatures to take part in a special fancy dress competition on Monday at 3.30pm on the Bandstand.

Why not learn to sail? Come down to Cardiff Bay and learn a new activity this bank holiday! Everyone aged 8 and over can enjoy a sailing session with our fully qualified, trained instructors. Visit the Cardiff Harbour Authority registration tent between 11 – 5pm on Saturday, Sunday or Monday. No experience is necessary and the cost is £1 per person for 30 minutes on the water.

There will also be an International Market selling a large array of products from all over the world. Bigger and better than ever, everyone is invited to browse the market stalls, selling a vast range of tasty treats. Polish, German and Pimms Bars will be located next to the Bandstand for you to sit back and enjoy the summer sun, with live music playing throughout the weekend.

Executive Member for Sport, Culture and Leisure, Cllr Nigel Howells, said: “It can be difficult to keep the whole family entertained over the bank holiday, but families need not worry, there is a whole host of entertainment and fun waiting for them at Cardiff Bay, and best of all entry is for free.

“The Harbour Festival is a firm family favourite in the city’s events calendar and this year we have introduced even more activities for the whole family to enjoy.”

It is the third incident of this kind in the capital this month and although detectives are keeping an open mind, there is a strong possibility that they are linked.

The most recent incident happened around 10.35pm at Costcutter, Whitchurch Road, on Thursday, July 21.

The suspects are described as four black or mixed race men wearing dark clothing.

A male shop worker required around 20 stitches for head injuries inflicted during the incident where a quantity of cash and packets of 10 Lambert and Butler cigarettes were stolen.

They were armed with what appeared to be a black handgun.

Just before leaving the shop one of the robbers removed his mask and said to the worker “Now you can call the police”.

Earlier incidents were at Spar, Clearwater Way, Lakeside, on Wednesday, July 6 at 10.20pm and at Spar, Allensbank Road, on Thursday, July 14 at 9.40pm.

Detective Inspector Shane Ahmed, from Cardiff Bay CID, who is leading the investigation into all three incidents, said: “Due to the similarities of locations, times, descriptions and the nature of the offences there is a strong possibility these incidents are linked but we are keeping an open mind.

“A full investigation is on-going and numerous lines of enquiry are being pursued including CCTV, house to house, intelligence and forensic work.

“We believe the men responsible for these robberies have local connections and urge the public to come forward with information as to their identities.

“Cardiff is a safe city and we will not tolerate violence being used against our shop workers who provide a valued service to their communities.

Detectives are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a silver Ford Focus or Fiesta parked in Canada Road on the night of Thursday, July 21, believed to be a getaway car used by the suspects.

They are also appealing for a potential key witness to come forward. Around the time of the incident, a white man wearing a green T-shirt and knee length shorts was seen on CCTV entering the Panama Tandorri Restaurant on Whitchurch.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Cardiff Bay CID on 02920 527 420 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

A service of reflection, to pay respect to the victims of the bomb attack and mass shooting in Norway, is to be held at Cardiff’s Norwegian Church on Sunday at 3pm in the Grieg Room. Lord Mayor of Cardiff Cllr. Prof Delme Bowen, and the Lady Mayoress Ms Pamela Morgan will be in attendance.

The service, which will be in Norwegian, English and Welsh, will be led by the Cardiff Bay chaplain, the Reverend Gill Dallow.

After the horror of the atrocities emerged last weekend, Norway has entered a period of national mourning. The Norwegian Church has lowered its flag to half-mast and opened a book of condolences.

Hundreds of people have already visited the Church, a well known landmark on the Cardiff Bay waterfront, to leave flowers and messages of sympathy that will later be sent to their connections in Norway.

Councillor Delme Bowen, the Lord Mayor of Cardiff, and the Lady Mayoress Ms Pamela Morgan, who have already sent their condolences to the County Mayor of Hordaland, will also be in attendance at Sunday’s service.

Cardiff’s links with Norway developed after the growth in mining in the 19th Century and Norwegian seamen, exporting the coal from the Port of Cardiff, looked for a place to worship.

Cardiff became one of the first cities outside Norway to have such a place of worship, and during World War II when Norwegian seamen were unable to return to their homeland up to 70,000 Scandinavians were said to have worshipped there every year.

Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr Prof, Delme Bowen: said: “Cardiff has a very strong link with Norway and it’s important that we remember those who died in the atrocities .

“The Norwegian Church has, for the past week been a place where people can pay their respects to our friends in Norway.

“The service is our way of marking those who lost their lives and showing our support to a country who has suffered greatly this last week.”

On Wednesday 6th July, three Cardiff Primary Schools will return to Cardiff Bay to see the young salmon they have nurtured from eggs safely returned to the River Taff.

Gladstone, Lakeside and Thornhill Primary Schools have participated in the Salmon Coming Home Project; as part of the Cardiff Harbour Authority’s environmental education programme run by the Cardiff Bay Water Activity Centre.

Since February 2011, the school classes have each looked after the precious eggs, monitoring the water temperature and gaining an understanding of nature whilst in the classroom.

Responsible for checking the equipment and daily inspections, each school has been successful in safely monitoring the eggs. Once the eggs hatched in to the Alevins, they were then collected and taken to Cynrig Hatchery, supported by the Environment Agency, for specialist feeding for a few months, to build up their strength prior to being released.

Tomorrow they will be released into the rivers as Salmon Fry and each class will be on site to see them as they swim free for the first time.

Olive oil fresh from rural Italy; produce from twin city Stuttgart; award-winning cured and smoked charcuterie delicacies from rural Monmouthshire*; cockles, mussels and laver bread from the Gower; gourmet exotic pies from the legendary Pieminister; and award-winning homemade chocolate brownies are just some of the delights across the weekend of July 8-10 with the return of the ever-popular Cardiff International Food & Drink Festival to the capital’s scenic waterfront.

Over 100 food producers from Wales, England, Scotland, France, Germany, Spain and Italy will fill Roald Dahl Plass and around the waterfront for the many thousands of visiting foodies. There will be new features such as the food demonstrations from some of the leading culinary lights in Cardiff in the John Lewis Food Theatre.

Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr. Nigel Howells said: “The Cardiff International Food and Drink Festival is one of the most popular attractions in our summer-long Cardiff Festival, creating a fantastic atmosphere in a tented village that entices food lovers from the city and much further afield to this ideal setting overlooking the waters of Cardiff Bay.”

The John Lewis food Theatre features hands-on workshops, including those aimed at young culinary talent, and live food demonstrations from TV chef Angela Gray and some of Cardiff’s leading chefs who regularly spoil us at restaurants such as the new Crown Social in the Parc Thistle, the Park Plaza, and Jamie’s Italian.

Cardiff Bay offers the best locations to relax and enjoy the show. There’s the Food Piazza on the terrace in front of the WMC, a popular Champagne Bar right down on the water’s edge, and the Pimm’s Bar on the terrace of the newly refurbished Norwegian Church Arts Centre where you can watch the sun go down There are also wine tasting seminars going on here throughout Saturday and Sunday.

There is also a Craft Fayre and Farmer’s Market with a wide selection of Welsh and international goodies to chose from so you can even assemble your own picnic, accompanied by the views over the water.

The atmosphere is enhanced by a weekend-long programme of live music on the bandstand, and a variety of entertaining and interactive street theatre.

The Cardiff International Food & Drink Festival is mainly funded by the Welsh Government and represents a collaboration between Cardiff Council and Cardiff Harbour Authority, and a variety of local businesses.

The festival endorses Cardiff’s culinary credentials, with the Cardiff Harbour Festival including the British Fish Craft Championships to look forward to over August Bank Holiday, and the Great British Cheese Festival returning to Cardiff Festival over September 24-25.

The event is a staple of the summer’s Cardiff Festival, now in its 26th year and reflecting a broad and diverse range of colourful entertainment, largely free to enter and stretching over the summer holidays.
