Hain to defend devolution settlement

October 28, 2009 No Comments

hain2The Secretary of State of Wales, the Rt Hon Peter Hain MP, will reflect on a decade of Welsh devolution in a lecture at Cardiff University this week.

Mr Hain will present the case for the incremental devolution of powers to the Assembly, arguing that the current devolution settlement is working well. He will argue that the process enabling the Assembly to take on more and more law making powers is delivering much more than the old system, and is being continually reviewed and improved.

The lecture: “Good news: More powers for Wales” is hosted by Cardiff University’s Wales Governance Centre. The Centre’s Director, Dr Richard Wyn Jones, said: “We are delighted to welcome Mr Hain to the University. Given his central role in delivering devolution in 1997 and in the genesis of the 2006 Government of Wales Act, his thoughts about the future of devolution are of the utmost importance. They will be listened to with great attention by everyone with an interest in the matter.”

The lecture takes place this Thursday, October 29, at 4.15pm at the Birt Acres Lecture Theatre, Bute Building, Cardiff University. To attend, please contact: WalesGovernanceCentre@cardiff.ac.uk
