Winter Wonderland - Cardiff

Cardiff Council is delighted to announce that Wales’ newest and largest department store John Lewis will sponsor the big wheel, known as the John Lewis Eye, at bmibaby Cardiff Winter Wonderland.

The wheel celebrates the opening of the new John Lewis shop in Cardiff and marks a new era for shopping in Cardiff. The Welsh branch is the biggest John Lewis opened outside of London and is the anchor of the new St David’s development.

bmibaby Cardiff Winter Wonderland returns on Thursday November 12 until Sunday January 3, offering open air skating against the backdrop of Cardiff’s beautiful civic centre buildings. The 60m high John Lewis Eye will offer spectacular views of the open air ice rink below and panoramic aspects across the capital city.

Standing taller than Nelson’s Column, the Eye is Wales’ tallest Christmas attraction and includes 40 gondolas which can accommodate six people each on the 10-minute flights. From the capsules, passengers will be able to spot sights including Cardiff Castle, the Millennium Stadium and even as far as the Bristol Channel from the dizzy heights at the top of the wheel.

Executive Member for Sport, Culture and Leisure, Cllr Nigel Howells, said: “John Lewis sponsoring the John Lewis Eye marks a new chapter for bmibaby Cardiff Winter Wonderland. The event is now firmly established as a family favourite at Christmas time and it’s great to see partnerships forming between long standing events and new companies in Cardiff.”

Liz Mihell, managing director of John Lewis Cardiff said: “We are proud to be part of such an important event for Cardiff. I can’t wait to get a birds eye view of the city from the top of the wheel.”

bmibaby Cardiff Winter Wonderland is one of many ways to celebrate Christmas in the capital, other events include the Christmas Lights Switch on November 12th, Cardiff’s Calennig New Year’s Eve celebrations, with free live music stage supported by Queen’s Arcade, the Admiral Family Fire Show; and the Admiral Free New Year’s Eve Bus Service.
